Vessel delays, mostly caused by berth congestion, is a major issue for the industry. Not only does it cost the charterer huge amounts of money in demurrage, but it interrupts their supply chains and can result in plant closures and lost sales. For the owners, it can result in cancellation of other cargoes and reduction of earnings when the market provides higher earnings than the demurrage rate. Good operational support cannot necessarily eliminate this situation, but it can reduce it significantly.
